  • Jesus rode triumphantly into Jerusalem on a Donkey
    • This was a fulfillment of prophecy (Zech. 9:9)
    • A king riding on a donkey was a sign of Peace
    • David put Solomon on a donkey’s back when he was anointed as the next king of Israel
  • On the night Jesus was born, an Angel declared “Peace on Earth, good will to man.”
    • When Jesus offered Himself as a sacrifice for sin it provided a means for sinful mankind to find true peace with God.
    • When Jesus rode into Jerusalem on the donkey , God affirmed that Jesus was the anointed one who would bring glory to the Father. (John 12:29)
  • The crowd shouted, “Hosanna!”
    • “Save Us Now, We Pray!” (Psalm 118:26)
  • They threw their Garments
    • A symbol of submission to authority
  • They waved Palms
    • A symbol of Jewish nationalism
  • There were three groups represented:
    • Jesus’ followers (disciples)
    • Followers of the crowd
    • Religious leaders who opposed Jesus
    • The shouts of “Hosanna!” from the crowd were of the same manner and intensity as the shouts that would follow – “Crucify Him!”
  • Why did people follow Jesus?
    • Some accepted Him as Messiah
    • Some were curious, hoping to catch a glimpse of someone famous
    • Some were trying to put an end to His popularity and the threat He posed to their power
  • Why do people follow Jesus today?
    • Some have accepted Him as their Lord and Savior
    • Some are curious and are hoping for some personal gain or fulfillment
    • Some want to stop Christianity dead in its tracks
  • Jesus knew that He HAD to go to the Cross
